About The Gertrudes
The Gertrudes began with a dream by the band's banjo player Annie Clifford, of nine Kingston-based musicians "on stage at a bar in Halifax that I used to go to, which has since closed down.” Many of the musicians onstage in her dream were people she and partner Greg Tilson had performed with in Tidal Mass, a 24-hour art event in Kingston in September 2007 organised by sculptor Don Maynard. Soon after Clifford's dream the band became a reality and has lately been acclaimed as a local phenomenon with potential to grow far beyond its home city. Its members include Clifford and Tilson (banjo and guitar), Josh Lyons (bass), Jason Erb (keyboards), Pim van Geffen (trombone), Owen Fernley (accordion), Matt Rogalsky (electric guitar and electroacoustic treatments), Ian Montgomery (percussion) and Chris Trimmer (theremin). The band's style has been described as "ambient folk," and combines traditional acoustic instruments with unusual sonic underpinnings. Their first studio recordings will soon be available as the second release on Kingston's Apple Crisp Records.
