Come on out to Modern Fuel on Friday February 27 for our Miracle Fruit Dance Party. Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) is a fruit native to West Africa which contains a natural chemical that temporarily rewires certain tastes buds causing intensely sour flavours to seem deliciously sweet.

$10 at the door buys you one Miracle Fruit tablet, flavour shots and unlimited dancing. Additional tablets are $3 each.

According to scientists from the University of Florida’s Centre for Smell and Taste, the cause of the reaction is a protein called miraculin, which binds with the taste buds and acts as a sweetness inducer when it comes in contact with acids. There are no known dangers associated with eating miracle fruit.

Modern Fuel has secured a rare supply of the miracle fruit extract: this will be the premiere of Miracle fruit in Kingston and your only chance to try it out. We will have a number of different foods and flavour combinations available for you to experiment with. In addition to the taste sensations, there will be a cash bar and an assortment of DJs, headed up by Luis Jacob, providing good beats for your baaaad eats.

As a recent exhibition of his work was entitled “Open Your Mouth and Your Mind Will Follow,” Toronto-based artist Luis Jacob is the perfect man to provide music for the night’s antics. An acclaimed artist who participated in documenta 12, Jacob is also known as an awesome DJ. He was a member of The Hidden Cameras, appearing on the albums The Smell of Our Own and Mississauga Goddam, and creating artwork for the EP the arms of his 'ill'. Jacob created and produced the limited edition Without Persons remix CD. His original audio track 'Without Persons' was recorded and then remixed by artists including Peaches, Greek Buck, Navigator (Simon Cowling), Aria, The Dot Wiggen Strings (Sandro Perri and Todd Fox), Pausenfuller, Brandon Labelle and Frank Rynne.
