Reception: Saturday 5 December 2009 6pm-8pm at the Union Gallery
Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre is partnering with the Union Gallery to present the work of visiting Thai artist Sarawut Chutiwongpeti, and collaborators, in a multimedia installation focusing on the hybridity of new media and cross-cultural exchange. The piece will represent the artist’s explorations of the in-between of nature and science, contemporary art and traditional culture. In his recent work, Chutiwongpeti asks the question, “What are our thoughts, doubts, fears, uncertainties, and reflections as we head towards the new material and immaterial territories which we are to inhabit in the future?” His residency in Kingston will contribute to the 'real-life' research he has undertaken in the development of his practice and will further the investigations of his “Wishes, Lies, and Dreams” projects. Chutiwongpeti will work with selected individuals to produce a collaborative installation, for the project room at the Union Gallery and on the internet. Various items, from the religious to the profane, will be contributed by participants and combined in a mixed media installation.
Sarawut Chutiwongpeti graduated from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at Chulalongkorn University in 1996. Since then he has been working as a media artist with Cyber Lab at the Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. He has traveled extensively as a visiting artist/researcher and has exhibited at numerous sites including the Banff Centre for the Arts (Canada), the ImaginAsia Project, the Smithsonian Institution, the ZKM Project, the Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre, and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. He was most recently a participating artist at the Biennale Réunion 2009.
