This summer, Modern Fuel, in partnership with the Katarokwi Native Friendship Centre, is organizing Voice Off a multi-media based project that brings artists Sarah DeCarlo and Bear Thomas to work with youth ages 12-25 at the Katarokwi Native Friendship Centre through video workshops. The partnership between Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre and the Katarokwi Native Friendship Centre is a new community outreach initiative made by Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre to build new relationships between the Kingston arts community and the community served by the Katarokwi Native Friendship Centre.

In conjunction with its current exhibition One Dimensional Space, Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre is holding a panel presentation and book launch addressing the history of artist-run culture and its forms of organization, featuring authors Vincent Bonin, Clive Robertson, and Robert Labossière. One Dimensional Space continues at Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre until June 7th.

There has been considerable mainstream news coverage about how the federal government’s proposed changes to Canadian copyright laws may restrict consumers’ music, video and software downloading and sharing. Yet little has been said on the possible effects it might have on the arts community, especially those using found material, sampling and collage techniques with copyrighted materials. Should artists be worried?
