Variations on Symmetry

In the Main Gallery, Modern Fuel presents Variations on Symmetry, an exhibition of works by the artists Eliza Au (Richmond, BC) and Ying-Yueh Chuang (Toronto, On). The two artists show a personal translation of symmetry through their work in contemporary ceramics. Their work reflects a hybrid of Western and Eastern cultures, values and beliefs and examines symmetrical patterns and forms and their connection to the spiritual and natural world.

Smokin' In the Boys Room

In the Main Gallery, Modern Fuel presents Smokin’ in the Boys’ Room, a multi-media exhibition curated by Michael Davidge that includes the work of the artists Christopher Arnoldin (Toronto, ON), Jo-Anne Balcaen (Montreal, QC), and Matt Rogalsky (Kingston, ON), each abstracting from rock and roll in their own way. Rogalsky’s “Discipline” focuses on the electric guitar as the iconic instrument of the 20th century and an object of obsession. In the installation, twelve electric guitars represent the 12 tone equal tempered scale.

The Institute for Future Life Regression

In the Main Gallery, Modern Fuel presents The Institute for Future Life Regression, an installation of work by Dustin Wilson (Guelph, ON). In this project, Wilson generates simulations of possible future individuals through a participatory form of pseudo-divination and story telling. While Wilson’s practice is multidisciplinary in the production of video and animation, performance and installation, drawing is essential to him for producing speculative images that are filtered through physical, biological and geographic constraints.

Modern Fuel’s 13th Annual Regional Juried Members’ Exhibition will be presented at Modern Fuel from August 6th to September 10th. An opening reception with the artists and curator in attendance will be held on August 6, 2011 at 7pm
