Volunteer

At Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, we rely on the generosity of our volunteers. Having only two permanent staff members, the operation of the Modern Fuel Gallery, the State of Flux and the New Media Lab is dependent on Modern Fuel members and supportive community members.

Not only can our volunteer positions enhance your C.V., but sharing your time with Modern Fuel is a chance to promote art, interact with the Kingston art community and gain valuable skills. The following volunteer tasks and positions are grouped into three categories. There is crossover between these categories & volunteers are encouraged to participate in many different areas.

Please note, this is only a brief outline, job details may change. If you are unsure about anything, please ask a staff or board member.

1) Communications

To keep the public, our membership and the funding bodies informed about the Gallery exhibitions and activities, Modern Fuel produces a number of publications and mail outs. For example, Modern Fuel creates and distributes newsletters, pamphlets, media releases, posters & invitations. We require help in distributing posters, pamphlets, and invitations, and also preparing the mail outs that go to our members three times per year.

2) Events and Receptions

Modern Fuel hosts a number of special events including art receptions and fundraising events. These high-energy events depend on the help of volunteers. At these events, volunteers are needed for set-up, which includes preparing and setting up the food table, beer cooler, plates for food etc. After the event volunteer are needed for clean-up, which includes sweeping, putting away tables and chairs, clearing food etc.

3) Resource Centre

The Nan Yeoman’s Resource Centre is a great initiative to volunteer for. You can become acquainted with the gallery’s fascinating past, its wonderful collection of rare books and ephemera, and update yourself on new international trends in contemporary art.

4) Art Auction

Some tasks involve: selling ads in catalogues, working with the media to promote the auction, liaison with artists, helping set-up art at Modern Fuel Gallery for pre-showing, taking photos and making slides, coordinating refreshments for auction night etc.

Internships

Internships and co-op opportunities provide a focused opportunity for students to experience multiple facets of the nonprofit contemporary arts environment. In the past, Modern Fuel has worked alongside Queen's University and St. Lawrence College to make these opportunities happen. If interested, please speak with Michael Davidge, the Artistic Director, to find out more about student placements at Modern Fuel.

Donate

We need your help! If you or anyone you know wants to donate to Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, please contact the Modern Fuel staff. Donating to such an important cultural institution in Kingston is not only rewarding, but also comes with many benefits including tax deductible receipts, your name in the Modern Fuel newsletter and on the Modern Fuel Wall O'Fame, and most importantly our gratitude.
