JOB OPPORTUNITY: Summer Gallery Assistant

MODERN FUEL ARTIST-RUN CENTRE is now accepting applications for a unique and dynamic summer job opportunity in the field of contemporary art and arts administration.

TITLE: Summer Gallery Assistant
HOURS: 30 hours per week (Tuesday - Saturday)
DURATION: Tuesday, 3 June - Saturday, 30 August, 2014
WAGE: $12 per hour

Under the supervision of the Interim Artistic Director and General Director, the Summer Gallery Assistant will have the following responsibilities:

- Greet and welcome visitors into the gallery, ensuring their safety at all times
- Provide information about Modern Fuel and current exhibitions to the visiting publics
- Maintain front of house areas including foyer, washrooms, publications station, exhibition displays and gallery spaces
- Track visitor numbers and basic demographic statistics
- Encourage visitors to leave feedback in the guest book
- Special/small projects as they arise
- Assist with daily administration functions of the gallery
- Develop and deliver new social media content
- Distribute promotional materials to local businesses and partners, as well as assist with the organization of bi-monthly membership mailings
- Assisting with facility maintenance including light cleaning and other duties
- Review physical records on site and work with staff to cull files before the gallery moves to its new location in the Tett Centre
- Assist staff with the planning and implementation of special events and public programs such as opening receptions, music concerts, and our annual outdoor Square Pegs film screening in Market Square
- Purchase supplies for facility, office, exhibitions, and/or receptions as required
- Assist with updating and maintaining the membership and volunteer databases
- Provide front-line customer service to artists, members and guests


- Post-secondary educational background in Fine Arts, Art History, Arts Administration, Film, Museum Studies or other similar program
- A strong knowledge of and passion for contemporary arts practices
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
- Skills and experience delivering exceptional customer service in a public setting
- Experience with Mac computer systems and basic office programs including database software, email, spreadsheets and word processing programs
- Knowledge and experience using social networking tools such as Twitter and Facebook
- Adaptability, time management, initiative, positive attitude, and attention to detail are desired characteristics
- Bilingualism in both official languages is definitely an asset, but not required for the position
- Certifications in Smart Serve, First Aid/CPR are highly desired
