Performing/Creating Audio Art with Ableton Live

This workshop invites participants to experiment and create with Ableton Live, a software music sequencer and digital audio workstation used in live performances, for sound design, and audio art creation. We will use field recordings, spoken word, and other sounds as source material while learning how to use Live. We will discuss how to digitally manipulate audio recordings to create new and interesting sonic palettes.

Participants are invited to bring in their own audio clips (in .wav file format) and their own laptops and headphones. You can download a 30 day free trial of Ableton Live (preferably in advance):

We will provide two workstations already loaded with Ableton Live and a sample set of field recordings, MIDI sequences, and other sound effects.

In conjunction with the Culture Development Fund (Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport), Modern Fuel is pleased to host this extensive media artists-in-residence with collaborative duo Jane Kirby and David Parker. 

From February 17 to June 20, Kirby and Parker will explore the potential of the moving body as an instrument mediated by technology, combining interactive technologies with dance and choreography. While Parker has studied philosophy and software development, and Kirby theatre and acrobatics, together they bring to the fore many concerns of emerging technological practices, especially in relation to wearable devices, tracking and the body. It is a multidisciplinary approach that utilizes technology and digital means in both production and presentation. Both have been involved in public art, theatre, sound and media arts events, and it is their exciting collaborative approach and active engagement with the Kingston arts community that make them the ideal artists to launch this inaugural Media Artist-In-Residence Program.
