About the Event
The Black Studies Summer Seminar in partnership with Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre invites you all to the launch of Buseje Bailey. Reasons Why We Have to Disappear Every Once in a While. A Black art history project by Yaniya Lee, a new chapbook on the life and work of Black lesbian artist Buseje Bailey.
Drawing on archival documents uncovered during Lee’s residency at Artexte, the book brings together a selection of rare materials from Bailey’s career, a new interview with the artist, and a letter by Sandra Brewster. Through this work, Lee offers a model for how we might study, curate, and write about Black Canadian art with care.
The evening will feature a reading from the book, music, and time to gather and honour Bailey’s contributions by way of Lee’s deep study and commitment to this history.
