THE REMIX RESIDENCY
The Remix Residency runs from August 1 - August 30, 2025.

This Remix Residency invites QTBIPOC artists to explore how archives (personal, community-based, and/or institutional) can be tools for remembering, queering, reframing, and remixing the past to help envision and imagine liberatory futures. Centered in Katarokwi-Kingston, The Remix Residency will support 5 selected artists that aim to critically engage with QTBIPOC histories, challenge colonial narratives, and co-create knowledge rooted in resistance, memory, and collective care. In a time of growing political repression, this residency affirms the urgency of reconnecting with our ancestors, understanding our positionalities, and queering archives to disrupt the historical and continuous erasure of QTBIPOC histories and lived experiences. It’s The Remix!!

Some Questions to Consider:
What does it mean to co-create knowledge through art as racialized queer people?
How do we challenge and disrupt colonial narratives by bringing our ancestors and their stories into contemporary dialogue?
How can using archival materials in our art practice(s), rooted in memory and resistance, help us liberate our communities?

Successful Applicants Will Receive the Following Residency Perks:
-
Access to a personal section of the gallery to use as studio space; within Modern Fuel hours (Tuesday to Saturday from 11am–5pm), as well as outside of operational hours from August 1 - August 30, 2025
-
A year-long general membership to Modern Fuel
-
A $520.00 honorarium
-
Optional feedback sessions with the Executive Director, Program Administrator, and/or select members of the Board of Directors, and other arts professionals by appointment
-
Opportunities to participate in workshops surrounding accessing and exploring local archives, and how to integrate archival materials into your art practice(s)
-
An opportunity to display and discuss the work you created at the end of the residency on August 30, 2025 in a public Artist Talk event - “It’s The Remix Revelations!”
-
Promotional support during the residency, and for future exhibitions or events that result from the residency, where possible

Eligibility Requirements
This residency opportunity is designed for artists of all disciplines that are physically located in Katarokwi-Kingston during the residency. To participate, artists must self-identify within the queer/trans community, and be Black, Indigenous, and/or a person of colour (QTBIPOC). They can be emerging artists with existing artistic practices, or Newcomers (those who have lived in Canada for less than 5 years) who are early or mid-career artists that are curious and eager to explore and integrate archival materials, especially Katarokwi-Kingston focused archives, into their art practice(s). Ideal candidates are enthusiastic about enhancing their practice through workshops, peer support, mentorship, and collaborative engagement.

Selection Criteria
Modern Fuel will organize a selection committee for The Remix Residency composed of Modern Fuel staff, Board Directors, and select members of the Kingston arts community that are QTBIPOC. Committee members will be asked to review proposals individually and collectively, with the final decision being a collective agreement by a majority of committee members.
Modern Fuel will be selecting 5 artists from a variety of mediums in order to support a diversity of artistic practices.
Given that Modern Fuel has not imposed any specific expectations for the outcome of the residency or mediums practiced, the selection criteria will be based on the following:
-
Proximity to the City of Katarokwi-Kingston, Ontario: Participants must be physically located within the KFLA area, and we are unable to provide compensation for travel or accommodations for the duration of the residency.
-
Availability of Workspace: The Remix Residency is intended to provide much-needed workspace for the development of projects by individuals who do not have regular access to space to do so otherwise, and priority selection will be needs-based.
-
Artistic Merit: The Remix Residency is open to artists at the student, emerging, and mid-career stages of their practice, therefore artistic merit will be based on a demonstrated dedication to artistic practice and professional development. Given that this residency is intended for individuals without access to regular studio space, this dedication will not be evaluated based on how much time you are able to put in (for example, you do not need to be able to practice full-time to be eligible).
-
Dynamic Application: The applicant outlines a dynamic proposal for the residency period, the proposed idea/project/practice embodies innovative and experimental approaches, demonstrates passion and enthusiasm for working with archival materials and QTBIPOC histories, and aligns with Modern Fuel's broader mandate.

Applications are due by June 15th at 11:59pm.
